True Story
Fluxus Mystery
By Allen Bukoff

On Saturday, November 24th, 2003, my wife and I left our house--just before 6pm EST US. We got in my car--I was driving--backed out of our garage, headed down the short driveway, took a right onto the street, and about half way to the corner of Fairfax and Redding--at about 40 feet--I noticed there was something like a catalog or book lying in the middle of the road. Just short of the intersection I pulled the car to a stop, opened my door, reached down, and picked up the following book: Maciunas' LEARNING MACHINES - from Art History to a Chronology of Fluxus.

I handed it to my wife and she gasped. Here was an obscure book about a relatively obscure art movement lying in the middle of the road near our house and a longtime Fluxus fan (me) just happens along to find it. The book is in good condition (had not been run over) and must not have been there long, because it was not wet and it had been snowing & raining earlier.

What is [the likelihood of someone LOSING this book] x [the likelihood of a fluxus fan (or even someone who knows anything about Fluxus) FINDING this book]? Although I suspect this is truly coincidence, it is provocative.

Gilbert & Lila Silverman, on whose Fluxus collection this book is based, live in suburban Detroit, but no where near this map.
