50 Years AgoNovember 9, 1945 Announcement was made that plans for the construction of the new Audubon County Memorial hospital were nearing completion. The pheasant season was over in this part of the state and many and varied reports came in from the boys who were out for the first days of the season. Some came back with reports of shooting the legal limit but all agreed it was mighty hard to flush the birds from the corn fields and the abundance of other cover and it was equally hard to find the downed bird. Dick Rafferty, a gunner on a B-24 in the Burma-China war theater for many months, returned home Friday and would soon have his discharge from the service. Dick flew "The Hump" some thirty times, saw some of the rough going in China and helped bring out three of "Jimmy Doolittle's boys" who were in bad shape after months of imprisonment by the Japs. Miss Mary Elizabeth Tumbleson and Wesley Lynk Thomas were united in marriage. The Coon Rapids Ramblers lost their final game of the season to Guthrie Center 48-0. The CRHS basketball girls had been pretty busy with practices and putting on clinics. They would begin the regular season by playing Bayard November 21. |
25 Years AgoNovember 12, 1970 Three Coon Rapids football players were honored by being placed on the roster of the Coon Valley conference football squad for the 1970 season. Jerry Kult repeated as center on the offensive team and linebacker with the defensive unit. Joe Yeager was selected as one of three backs with the offensive team. Gary Sondgeroth received honorable mention. The Coon Rapids Municipal Utilities was offering a reward for information concerning the party or parties who had been shooting and breaking insulators on the 69,000 volt transmission line. Clarence Nielson was a patient in St. Anthony Hospital following a truck accident. He came up over the hill west of the Dale George place and had to swerve to avoid hitting a heifer that was in the road. The truck jack-knifed but did not overturn. He had a broken sternum and would be hospitalized for some time. His brother, Sam, was in the truck and received cuts and bruises. The Coon Rapids Crusaders posted a winning season this year by defeating East Greene 48-14. The 5-4 record was the first winning season since 1955. |
